Canadian Firefighters Memorial Overview The Canadian Fallen Firefighter’s Foundation has secured federal funding to institute a national memorial in the nation’s capital, dedicated to honouring the memory of Canada’s fallen firefighters. Arrangements have also been completed for the donation of land by the National Capital Commission on Lebreton Flats for the implementation of the Memorial. Once completed, the land and Memorial will transfer back to the NCC to manage in perpetuity. Memorial designs were delivered on July 19, 2010 for review by a technical/financial panel and a design jury. The panel was made up of a NCC representative, Karen Mills (Public Art Management), and GBA provided resources of an engineer and cost consultant to review details of the submissions. Following panel reviews, presentations by the artist/design teams to the Jury and NCC's ACPDR committee and jury deliberations on August 6th the winning design by Douglas Coupland/PLANT Architects Inc. was unanimously selected. GBA Leadership: GBA will now provide project management services to coordinate design development, secure the remaining design approvals, provide construction management to oversee implementation of the finalized design and manage close out processes for the project. The project is scheduled for completion March 2012. Update September 2011: The PLANT/Coupland design was further refined and, working with the NCC, Federal Land Use and Design Approval was granted on May 2, 2011. Following a 2-stage procurement process, including a Request for Qualifications and then Tender for General Contractor Services, the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation selected Prestige Design and Construction to implement the PLANT/Coupland memorial design. Prestige has undertaken restoration and renovation work on some of Canada's most notable historic, heritage and tourist landmarks including Confederation Park, Wellington Street and the Governor General's Residence. The bases for both the Lone Pine and the bronze firefighter statue and firepole are ready and will accept these additions to the site next spring when final landscaping/planting will be completed. GBA continues to provide project/construction management services on behalf of the Foundation.
